Turns out this is what it does: R (24V source) gets passed right through the PEK to connect the thermostat & furnace as normal W (heat) gets passed right through the PEK as well, unchanged. G (used to be Fan) gets re-purposed as the C (common ground) wire. So the Ecobee itself is powered by the R & C (used to be G) wires.1.
