I have the same thoughts about my exhaust; I would like something freer-flowing, but don't want much of a sound increase, if any. Your payload will be lower than a comparable 3.5L EB, so it isn't better overall for towing. The 3.5L EB will already pull the wheels off anything you would reasonably put behind a 1/2 ton, heck for the most part the 2.7L is more than enough.
